Convert MS Access to Visual Basic
PCA has years of experience successfully helping our Clients determine the best,
most cost-efficient path from MS Access to Visual Basic Business Applications over
the Web.
Microsoft Access is a great software package for developing interfaces to data,
and providing End Users with comprehensive tools to manipulate and analyze business
data. Applications built in MS Access are very flexible and can be easily modified
as business requirements and processes change. There are business situations however,
when a custom Visual Basic application is far better suited. The primary considerations
for determining if and when to migrate your MS Access application to a Visual Basic
application include:
- Stability of the Business Application
- Number of End Users (a small group vs. Enterprise-wide deployment)
- Application Performance and Usability
Business Application Stability
If your business application requirements are still a moving target, it's best to
stay in MS Access until you've nailed down the 1.0 feature/function set. It doesn't
make sense to start construction of your business application before you complete
the design phase.
Scope of Deployment
MS Access applications depend on a number of MS Access program files and runtime
libraries to function. An application written in Visual Basic is a complete standalone
product, with no dependencies that drive IT Support costs. Developing in Visual
Basic can be a bit more time-consuming than in MS Access, since MS Access provides
a lot of standard templates and objects. However, Visual Basic is a far better solution
when the end software is intended for mass deployment or commercial release.
Performance and Usability Access vs Visual Basic
Because VB applications are compiled into a single executable, they tend to perform
much faster than MS Access applications, which are continually interfacing with
and interpreting external application components. Going the VB route makes a lot
of sense if application performance is a primary consideration. In addition, Visual
Basic application Interfaces can be designed to Look and Feel just like local MS
Office applications, which can be a big benefit for complex applications when Training
Costs are an issue.
